Short History of Lodge Kirkliston Maitland 482

Please At over 150 years old, Kirkliston Maitland Masonic Lodge – with the exception of the local Church - can claim to be the village's oldest continually existing organisation.

Originally meeting in a hall above a baker's shop in the high street, the Lodge purchased the one time Territorial Army drill hall in the early 1920s. Much later, in a move that has proved highly successful, the Lodge now meet in Kirkliston Bowling Club and meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from September to April.

Membership of the lodge is open to males over the age of 21 years, or 18 years if they are the sons of freemasons.

Although insisting that successful applicants believe in the existence of a supreme being, it is one of the few - if not the only organisation in the world - which includes members of all recognised religious faiths. Resulting from this wide diversity of membership, the constitution and laws of the order prohibit any discussion of a political or religious nature at its regular meetings. Individual members are however permitted to express views on such subjects at other times.

Often described - incorrectly by some - as a 'secret society', Lodge Kirkliston Maitland 482, like its counterparts throughout the world, has nothing to hide. Names of the officials, who are elected annually are well known and details of meetings and functions are published widely online.

In May 1993, the Lodge also had details of its history down through the years published to mark the 125th anniversary of its formation and this situation was repeated when the Lodge marked its 150th Anniversary in 2018.

Freemasons in Kirkliston have always been - and will continue to be - active in the local community and will continue to offer their support to local charities and good causes, continuing to function as it has done since it was granted its Charter by the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Scotland in May 1868.
